Tenure position for Experimental High Energy physicist at UNICAMP – BRAZIL
Application is open for a tenure faculty position for a High Energy Experimental physicist at the “Gleb Wataghin” Physics Institute of the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) Brazil. UNICAMP is a leading institution in several research areas including experimental high energy physics, with members in several international collaborations such as the experiments at the RHIC and LHC accelerators, Cosmic Ray Pierre Auger observatory and neutrino experiments Double Chooz and LVD. A position as an assistant professor is the first step in the Higher Education Career at the University of Campinas (Unicamp). The starting salary for this position is R$ 8,211.02. The only way to become an assistant professor at Unicamp is to be approved in an open selection examination conducted by one of the university’s 22 schools and institutes.

Job opening for a MS –3 Assistant Professor Position
The State University of Campinas, through the General office, announces the opening of registration for the application procedure of an assistant professor position (level MS-3), in the field of High Energy particle physics, as described in section 2 of this document. Position is open for job category RTP (partial time) or preferably category RDIDP (full time dedication). The undergraduate courses that will be considered in the examinations of this application are (as described in the UNICAMP physics undergraduate courses): F128 (Physics 1), F228 (Physics 2), F315 (General Mechanics 1), F328 (Physics 3), F415 (General Mechanics 2), F428 (Physics 4), F489 (Quantum physics of atoms, molecules, solids, nuclei and particles), F520 (Mathematical Methods for Physics), F602 (Electrodynamics 2), F689 (Quantum Mechanics 1) and F789 (Quantum Mechanics 2).
1. Minimum Requirement for the application:
1.1 Only candidates who hold a PhD degree may apply for the open examination.
1.2 It is desired that the candidate is:
1.2.1 A specialist in High Energy Experimental Physics, in the sub-areas of Cosmic Rays and Astrophysics or Particle physics or High Energy Nuclear physics or Instrumentation in High energy physics.
1.2.2 The application of a candidate that is not in the field described in the previous section will still be accepted.
1.2 2 The application must be filed at the Administration Office of the Gleb Watagin Physics Institute of UNICAMP, by the candidate or his proxy, within the period of 30 days from the release date of the public notice which establishes the specific conditions and regulations for the open examination. Candidates who live abroad may appoint a proxy, though a signed letter (in Portuguese) to present the required documents. The proxy letter must be a signed document authorizing him/her to act on his/her behalf, as well as all the other documents mentioned in the items below.
2. About the position
A position as an assistant professor is the first step in the Higher Education Career at the University of Campinas (Unicamp). The starting salary for this position is R$ 8,211.02 as of October, 2011. The only way to become an assistant professor at Unicamp is to be approved in an open selection examination conducted by one of the university’s 22 schools and institutes.
3. Required Documentation for application:
3.1 A letter with a request to the dean of the school/institute containing the candidate’s name, address and profession. This letter must be in Portuguese. In this letter, the candidate may also express in writing, his/her intention of carrying out the exams in English. The content of the exams carried out in English and in Portuguese will be the same.
3.2 Proof that the candidate holds a PhD degree valid in Brazil. For application purpose, the candidate may present just the defense minutes of his/her doctorate thesis. If successful in the open examination, the candidate who has finished his/her PhD abroad will have to obtain the accreditation of the title mentioned with the objective of national validity, under penalty of dismissal.
3.3 Personal identification document, with a copy;
3.4 Seven copies of the memorial document, reporting the candidate’s academic achievements and containing the following information:
3.4.1. Academic titles;
3.4.2. Curriculum vitae et studiorum;
3.4.3. Scientific, teaching and professional activities;
3.4.4. Honorific titles;
3.4.5. Scholarships in post-graduation level;
3.4.6. Attendance to courses, conferences, symposiums and seminaries.
3.5. A sample or copy of each work or document mentioned in the curriculum vitae document;
3.6 The candidate who needs special conditions to take the exams must make a written request at the moment of the application, indicating the necessary adaptations.
4. About the selection Committee
4.1 A Judging Committee composed of five titular members and two substitutes, all of them PhDs, is in charge of examining the titles presented, conducting the tests of the open examination and proceeding to the oral interview in order to give a detailed judgment for the classification of the candidates.
4.2 At least two members of the Judging Committee must be external from the school/institute or belong to other institutions.
5. About the Exams
5.1 The open examination is composed of the following exams:
a. Specific knowledge;
b. Academic achievements;
c. Oral defense;
d. Teaching ability.
5.2 The specific knowledge exam is composed of:
a. A written dissertation exam, which deals with subject of general related to the content of the program of disciplines or the group of disciplines regarding the open position;
5.3 In the academic achievements exam, the Judging Committee appraises the memorial document (CV) elaborated by the candidate.
5.4 In the oral defense exam, the candidate is interviewed by the Committee on the contents of the discipline or group of disciplines related to the selection criteria and/or on the memorial document presented with the application.
5.5 The teaching ability exam deals with the program of the discipline or group of disciplines taught in the university in the previous year to the open examination, and in this test the candidate must reveal a deep knowledge in the subject.
5.6 The subject for the teaching ability exam is chosen by lot within 24 hours in advance, from a list of ten points organized by the Judging Committee.
6. About the Evaluation and Judgment
6.1 At the end of each exam, each member of the Judging Committee (examiner) attributes the candidates a grade from zero to ten.
6.2 The exams have a classificatory character.
6.3 At the discretion of the school/institute, the specific knowledge exam may also be eliminatory. In this case, only the candidates with grades superior to seven from at least three of the five examiners may move on to the remaining exams of the open examination.
6.4 At the end of all the exams, each examiner attributes the candidates a final grade, which is a weighted average of the attributed grades by the examiner to the candidate.
6.5 Each examiner classifies the candidates by decreasing sequence of the final grades given and indicates the candidate(s) for filling the existing opening(s), according to the final grades obtained. The examiner decides in cases of ties, with the criteria that he/she chooses to be pertinent.
6.6 A candidate is considered qualified if he/she obtains a minimum final grade of seven from the majority of the examiners.
6.7 The candidate to be appointed and considered for the position is the one that classifies in first place, who has obtained the most number of indications from the examiners.
6.8 The Judging Committee decides between the candidates with the same number of indications, prevailing successively the general average obtained and the higher university title.
7. About Elimination
7.1 The candidate that does not attend the summoning of the Judging Committee, does not show for the subject draw of the teaching ability exam or does not show for any of the exams, except the titles exam, is eliminated from the open examination.
8. About Appeals
8.1 The candidate can file an appeal to the University Council against the result of the open examination, exclusively of annulment, in a period of five days counting from the publication of the list with the qualified candidates in the “Diário Oficial do Estado”. The appeal must be filed in the General Office at Unicamp.
9. Final dispositions
9.1 The summoning, warnings and results of the open examination are posted in the “Diário Oficial do Estado” and in the site www.sg.unicamp.br, being of full responsibility of the candidate to follow them.
9.2 At the school/institute criteria, the approved and admitted candidate can be attributed other disciplines besides the ones referred in the open examination, since they are in the same area as the examination or in the performing area of the candidate.
9.3 The approved and admitted candidate will hold a permanent faculty position after a period of three years in exercise, during which he/she is submitted to a special performance evaluation, according to regulation foreseen by the university.
